New Beginnings: Career & Confidence Programme for Migrants

A culturally sensitive and empowering workshop series to help immigrants navigate employment, and build a future in Northern Ireland.

Target Group

Immigrants and refugees in Northern Ireland aged 18+, including recent arrivals and those rebuilding their careers.

Approach

Combines practical career tools with mindfulness, visualisation, and cultural healing.

Delivery

In-person or online group sessions (1.5–2 hours/week), facilitated by a qualified career advisor and trauma-informed coach.

Week-by-Week Breakdown

Week 1: Welcome, Identity & Strengths

  • Exploring identity in a new country
  • Recognising personal strengths and achievements
  • Sharing cultural backgrounds to build group trust
  • Mindfulness: Grounding meditation & “Who Am I Becoming?” visualisation

Week 2: Understanding the Job Market in NI

  • Local labour market overview
  • Sector needs and common job roles
  • Qualifications recognition and translation
  • Tool: Job market match-up activity
  • Mindfulness: Safety & Stability visualisation

Week 3: Cultural Competence & Navigating the Workplace

  • Understanding cultural norms in NI workplaces
  • Communication, etiquette, and body language
  • Addressing misunderstandings and microaggressions
  • Activity: Role-play real workplace scenarios
  • Mindfulness: Breathing practice for self-confidence

Week 4: Employment Rights & Discrimination

  • Basic employment law and worker rights in NI
  • Protection from discrimination and exploitation
  • How to raise concerns or seek help
  • Guest speaker: Employment rights advisor or community legal worker
  • Mindfulness: Visualisation for empowerment and dignity

Week 5: Building Job Search & Interview Skills

  • Writing or updating a CV and cover letter
  • Understanding recruitment processes in NI
  • Preparing for job interviews, mock interview roleplay
  • Tool: CV checklist & peer feedback
  • Mindfulness: Focus and inner calm meditation

Week 6: Visioning the Future & Taking Action

  • Creating a personalised career action plan
  • Setting short- and long-term goals
  • Celebrating personal growth and resilience
  • Visualisation: “A New Life in Northern Ireland” guided meditation
  • Closing ritual: Group affirmation circle
